dear lala

lala dearest, i have to talk to you, as a fellow book enthusiast, about herman melville. he's good, LA. i am reluctantly impressed by how articulate it is. i find it obvious that he was a man of above-average intelligence, surmising it from the mysterious depth and hinting messages behind his references and allusions. i find from his words knowledge of religion and greek literature and a handle on the english language that befits a classical writer.

i have yet to get behind the depth, meaning and philosophy behind his work Moby-Dick, and when i do, i'll tell you about it.

and in defense of the antagonist in the story, from whom is derived the eponymous title, you have to admit, the book does stand out because it is unusual to write a book or an adventure on whales or whaling...melville kc had experience as a sailor, that accounts for his capability and realism in writing moby-dick.

anyway...still reading the book.

according to the introduction, "Melville constructs some of the most extraordinary sentences in American literature" (Walcutt, 2003).

Check this out:

"...that mortally intolerable truth; that all deep, earnest thinking is but the intrepid effort of the soul to keep the open independence of her sea..."
(page 122, chapter 23, Moby-Dick)

"You cannot hide the soul."
(page 66, chapter 10, Moby-Dick)

needless to say, i am enjoying melville's flair with words and his manner of describing and narrating events.

still in page 127. will post more as i progress through moby-dick. =)
