news and current events - my version

A. Million People March

chai wasn't kidding pala when she said that we had both missed history as it was happening. hihi.

B. Miley

this New Yorker cartoon says it best:

C. Syria

syria is currently in the midst of a civil war, the progress of which is still being watched by the world. this is a satellite shot, somewhat sobering, of thousands of syrian refugees fleeing the war, crossing the tigris river and entering northern iraq.

on a different note, i find it a little unsettling how events like this are now captured via satellites. in previous times, these types of photographs would never have been possible to produce. i am reminded of the presentation secretary of state john kerry gave for the case of the US bombing syria following the chemical gas attack on civilians that occurred last august 21. he said:

We know where the rockets were launched from, and at what time. We know where they landed, and when. We know rockets came only from regime-controlled areas and went only to opposition-controlled or contested neighborhoods. And we know, as does the world, that just ninety minutes later all hell broke loose…

i find it a little chilling, actually, to ponder this. if i were a three-year-old, i would be asking the three-year-old toddler question, how do you know? are you looking at everything i do? i mean, if i were a syrian fighter on orders to bomb or gas an area, i would definitely carry out those orders in stealth. how is it that my activities are being picked up by another country's intelligence even in my more furtive moments? makes me wonder. john kerry didn't explain how they knew in his speech.

D. Chinese President Xi Jinping's Visit to the US

this is actually old news. just found it in my archive. below is a photo taken from the visit. in it, xi jinping is walking with obama and they were captured on camera mid-stride. the photo then made the rounds in china where someone immediately associated it with a random photo of winnie the pooh walking side by side with tigger. the comparison was too uncanny (and perhaps too close to reality?) that it went viral in china. deeming it too unflattering, the strict and omnipresent chinese net police set about deleting the photo wherever it turned up. grabe naman, jokes only lang daw naman eh. ^_^
