I'm reading at the same time right now Alexander McCall Smith's Tea Time For The Traditionally Built and Little Women (Louisa May Alcott).

I was at the table, and Clyde was on her laptop, googling George Eliot's Middlemarch.

Clyde: Did you know that George Eliot was a girl?

Cory: George Eliot was a girl?!

Clyde: Haha! You didn't know! I got that from One True Thing (Anna Quindlen). They were talking about it in the book. George Eliot is a pseudonym.

Cory: Did you know that Evelyn Waugh is a girl?

Clyde: Well, of course!

Cory: Haha! (Gotcha that time!) Evelyn Waugh is a boy!

Clyde: I knew there was something wrong with that sentence.

Note: Evelyn Waugh, author of Brideshead Revisited, is actually deceased already. The use of the present tense linking verb "is" is just reflective of normal casual conversation where inaccuracies are just permissively made.

I think I got that information about Evelyn Waugh from Mimi, but it is also referenced in the movie Lost In Translation.

Anna Faris: But listen, let's all go out for a drink sometimes. Yeah?

Guy named Giovanni Ribisi: Yeah, yeah.

Anna Faris: You know, call me, okay?

Giovanni Ribisi: Yeah, okay.

Anna Faris: Alright. Listen, I'm under Evelyn Waugh. Shh, okay?

Scarlett Johansson: [after Kelly leaves] Evelyn Waugh? Evelyn Waugh was a man.

Giovanni Ribisi: Oh, come on, she's nice. What? You know, not everybody went to Yale. It's just a pseudonym, for Christ's sake.

    Hahaha! I love Evelyn Waugh. He's among the "100 most influential Catholics" of the century, imagine? And why don't you also ask Clyde out for a drink? Sounds like a good idea to me. ;)

I lamented to my boardmates before: My Korean students don't laugh at my jokes. I pouted. "What jokes?" they asked. "Well," I explained. "My student and I were discussing an article about superstitions. And I asked him if he was superstitious. He said yes.
